    Thoughts from Sunday's Game

Tuesday, February 12, 2008, 09:18 PM EST [General]

My thoughts from Sundays game are a little sobering, as it reminded me how life can be lost or saved just by the actions in moments.

I was sitting in Section 306, Row 1, Seat 22 when Richard Zednik was waving his arm, holding his other hand on his neck as blood flowed from him onto the ice.  It was a moment that sucked every bit of life from the building, except from those who were there and needed to be alert - the EMT's.  If it wasn't for them on the scene and their quickly getting to Zednik, I shudder to think of the discussion that would have followed.

Now, I would like to mention that there are some people who should be barred from anything.  They would come from Section 306, Row 2, Seasts 21 and 22, who were loud and had too much enthusiasm in their ramblings.  Their comments included "Did you get any pictures?" and "What if he dies?  Would they cancel the game?  I better get a raincheck if they cancel the game!"  To you, I say that you suck as humans, and you suck as hockey fans.

    Great Skate

Sunday, February 10, 2008, 12:15 AM EST [General]

Having grown up most of my life in Southern California, I haven't been on ice too much.  One thing I have wanted to do was try playing ice hockey.  I thought it would be a semi-easy transistion, considering I spent 8 seasons playing high school roller hockey and 3 playing rec roller hockey, playing all positions, but mostly goalie.

So, when I moved back to New York in 2005 (I was born in the Rochester area and moved to California when I was 4), my first Christmas back, I bought a pair of ice skates with the hopes of learning to play ice hockey.  But, I didn't have all the equipment, because roller hockey players usually don't wear shoulder pads or hockey pants.  They may wear a roller hockey girdle, but that won't work so well in ice hockey.  So, while I was trying to save the money, I patiently waited.

Now that I have the money without waiting and saving because I have a decent job, I can't find what I need.  I can find shoulder pads easily, but I can't find pants in my size.  I'd have to wait to get them in March or April from Great Skate.  I need an extra large, because of my big frame.  But they don't have any right now, so I'm outta luck.

Well, I'll write again, maybe with pictures, after the Sabres game tonight against Florida.  It's the first game I have been to since 2006 against Carolina.  I'm also going March 19 against Tampa Bay.  So I get to see both Florida teams this year.  All I am missing is Atlanta and Washington for seeing all Southeast division teams.

Proving itself to be above the rest.

I'm glad that HockeyScape has the Game Day Corner from the Sabres games.  It's another way that Mike is showing he is making this the premeire hockey community online.  This isn't anything like another community that I was apart of, which opened up, put up a few ads in the Pepsi Center, and nothing else is done with it.

I like the Game Corner for a few reasons.  It's good to see the insights into the game that being an insider allows, and it helps knowing what players are thinging and feeling.  Sure, there are a lot of us who discuss hockey, but do we see what Adam Mair thinks in the paper?  Not really.  Mair is one of those guys who leaves it all out there, so it would be nice to have things from his perspective.

It's also good that a community of real people has a chance for something like this, instead of just the Sabres site line.  It's good the "real people" of the community have the same access that just the select press has been getting, and feel it is a good thing for everyone here.

I'll see you all at the game tomorrow against Florida.

    My Thoughts Exactly

Sunday, January 27, 2008, 09:05 PM EST [General]

I have made the decision that I am going to look to get the last few pieces of ice hockey equipment I need (pants and shoulder pads) and try to learn ice hockey.  It'll be my birthday gift to myself, which is coming up on Wednesday.  I'm beginning to feel old, even though I am only turning 26.

But this should open up more for me to play if I try playing ice because it seems there is always a league going on.  But I'd definitely be in the beginner league, seeing as backward skating isn't something I can do on the fly in ice, though I can start and go backwards decently from a dead stop.

And my weight loss is stalling, but still moving slowly in the proper direction.  I'm happy about that, and the fact that my fitness seems to be getting better faster than I am losing weight.  But my diet still isn't great, despite what I am doing with my workout routine.

And that's all for now.  Until later:

    Pick Up (Game) Central?

Saturday, January 19, 2008, 03:18 PM EST [General]

OK, for the Free Agent group I created isn't working so well at this point, but I just came up with an idea that might be just as not working, but maybe worth a try.

It's a listing, where people who want to have pickup games will post, and then could either give a limit or not (message to RSVP kind of thing) and then a game is born.

Maybe it's just another half baked idea, I don't know.  But I will just toss it out there.
